Awhi Awa | Embrace a Stream

Awhi Awa | Embrace a Stream

Awhi Awa | Embrace a Stream is a project from Endangered Species Foundation, who aim to protect the rarest of Aotearoa’s species by mobilising movements and supporting conservation projects to ensure healthy, biodiverse ecosystems.

Sadly, 45% of our rivers are now unsafe for swimming and 76% of our native freshwater fish are either threatened with or at risk of extinction. By helping restore a stream near you, you can help improve the health of our waterways for our freshwater species, including tuna (longfin eel) and the kōaro (native fish).

When you purchase an Awhi Awa resource pack you will receive:

  • Information on how to awhi an awa and embrace a stream
  • Education material about endangered freshwater ika (fish) in te reo Māori and English
  • Presentation for teachers, businesses and community groups to share with people about the project
  • How drain systems work, and why we need to restore the health of our waterways
  • Access to education modules (4) for classrooms
  • Signage of a tuna (longfin eel) or kōaro (native fish) made of scrap steel
  • Concrete drill and screws
  • Video on how to apply signage
  • Subscription to our newsletter and updates on endangered species and the health of our waterways
