Administered by the NZ Marine Studies Centre, the aim of the project is to encourage communities to get involved in long-term monitoring of the seashore, to raise awareness of biodiversity and changes in the marine environment, and build links between scientists, educators, schools and community/iwi groups who care about the seashore environment and want to look after it.
Participants collect meaningful data about distribution, abundance and biodiversity of marine organisms along the NZ coast.
Through repetitive surveys, participants can monitor change in our coastal marine environment over time and investigate what might be causing that change Resources are available (e.g. Seashore Guides), simple monitoring protocols have been designed and tested (Mm2 and transect survey for rocky and sandy/muddy shores) and an interactive website has been established to enable the uploading and sharing of data and educational resources.
