We are a not-for-profit entity that empowers teachers to raise scientific literacy by providing comprehensive science resources for use in all Aotearoa New Zealand year 0-8 teaching environments.
What we do
House of Science was established in 2013 to build confidence and capability in science learning. We develop relevant, comprehensive, bilingual (te reo Māori and English) resource kits complete with teacher manuals, student worksheets and all the materials needed to carry out engaging science lessons.
The nature of the experiments enables ‘hands on’ learning which is designed to spark curiosity and empower all ākonga to enjoy, regardless of their learning style. The resource kits are a great way to engage students with science in a meaningful, exciting and interactive way.
How we do it
Our comprehensive library of 40 different topics are bilingual and cover the whole primary science curriculum. The kits are easy to use and include at least five hands-on experiments, catering for students in Years 0 – 8.
Topics include:
- Climate Change
- Big Blue Future (marine)
- A Load of Rubbish
- Electric Future
- Invasion Busters
- Water Analysis
- Land | Whenua (soil, water, insects)
Everything a teacher needs, including consumables, are included in the kit which are fully aligned to the New Zealand Curriculum.
Kits are delivered to schools using a subscription-based library system and are a huge hit with students and teachers. The cost of school membership to be able to access the kits is heavily subsidised so cost is no barrier.
Teacher PLD
Whakatipu Pūtaiao is an exciting PLD initiative from House of Science NZ. As an approved Ministry of Education PLD provider, this means that schools, kura, kāhui ako and clusters of schools can access the Ministry of Education’s regionally allocated professional development funded support.
Our PLD programme sits alongside the House of Science resource library and serves to further empower teachers to make primary science teaching engaging and equitable for all their students. It is a wrap-around supportive programme for teachers and schools based on extensive evidence and research regarding effective science teaching practice.
