This Education Gazette article (published May 16, 2022 in Volume 101) is the first in a series that will spotlight ways that education is contributing to a sustainable future. The aim is to include stories that highlight student-led initiatives, innovative teaching and learning programmes, and pathways to employment and training.
“The global literature is moving away from talking about ‘climate change education’ and towards ‘action for climate empowerment’ – to show that the purpose of learning is to empower action, and through action, learning. Often instead of talking about climate change, I talk about ‘education for the transition to a low-emissions future’ or ‘education for a climate-changing future’ because that points towards what we’re doing to create change.” - Rachel Bolstad, NZCER
