The Collaborative Community Education Model is a framework that enables schools and their community partners to use their local natural environment for quality teaching and learning.
Developed by educators, communities and ākonga, starting with Kids Restore the Kepler in Te Anau and Kids Greening Taupō, the CCEM model is based on years of experience and research and is now used to guide local collaborative projects in many locations around the motu.

This document serves as a guide for developing conservation education programmes based on a collaborative community approach, and is relevant for environmental education providers, local councils, mana whenua and community conservation groups. It aims to provide:
- An understanding about what the approach looks like and the way in which it works
- Some ‘tools’ for stakeholders to scope, plan and implement their local projects including a model of the approach and planning steps.
This informative guide is relevant for teachers from early learning through to secondary education. It contains a lot of information, so we expect teachers will pick the pages and content most helpful and relevant to their needs as they develop their own confidence in teaching within a conservation context and as they develop their own professional capability in using the natural world as their outside classroom.
