Aquatic Bug Bags

Aquatic Bug Bags

This learning inquiry is based on an Enviroschools project along the Waikirikiri / Selwyn River and has kindly been shared so it can be used and adapted by educators in any part of the country.

The creative and cross-curricular project involved tamariki from local schools who were supported to design, create, deploy and monitor instream habitat additions aimed at aquatic invertebrates.

The ‘Aquatic Bug Bags’ are made from hemp and stuffed with dried plant material. By providing habitat for small animals we can support mahinga kai species higher up in the food web, like tuna (longfin eels).

If you're inspired and would like to try this project in your own local awa, then we suggest connecting with either an Enviroschools facilitator or another provider in your area. You can search for Providers here.
